Abstract: A reconfigurable stacked Microstrip Patch Antenna (MSA) of operating frequencies in the range of (2-5) GHz is proposed for wireless applications. The new antenna is composed of two layers, the bottom layer is a patch with two slots designed on each side that can be controlled via switches. By adjusting the status of the switches, the resonance frequencies can be varied, thus achieving frequency reconfigurability. In order to increase the number of resonance frequencies and to enhance the bandwidth of the patch, another patch is placed on top of the first antenna. The two patches are separated with a dielectric layer optimized to yield the maximum number of resonance frequencies, bandwidth and gain.

Abstract: Fractal antennas have the characteristic of radiating in multiple frequencies, usually in a logarithmic pattern, through the property of self-similarity that fractal shapes possess. By connecting fractal shaped antennas, wideband coverage can be achieved. The analysis, design principles and several examples are shown to demonstrate this concept.

Abstract: A new concept of combining RF MEMS switches with fractal antennas is presented. The idea is to connect several antenna configurations together using RF MEMS switches to cover several frequency bands. By using a 'smart combination' of fractal shaped antennas, wideband coverage can be achieved for satellite and wireless communications. Moreover, the same antennas can be used for phased array applications as well. The analysis and design principles are discussed and presented. Several examples are shown to demonstrate the proposed concept.

Abstract: A broadband coplanar waveguide (CPW) to coplanar strip (CPS) transmission line transition directly integrated with an RF microelectromechanical systems reconfigurable multiband antenna is presented in this paper. This transition design exhibits very good performance up to 55 GHz, and uses a minimum number of dissimilar transmission line sections and wire bonds, achieving a low-loss and low-cost balancing solution to feed planar antenna designs. The transition design methodology that was followed is described and measurement results are presented.

Abstract: Koch-shaped dipoles are introduced for the first time in a wideband antenna design and evolve the traditional Euclidean log-periodic dipole array into the log-periodic Koch-dipole array (LPKDA). Antenna size can be reduced while maintaining its overall performance characteristics. Observations and characteristics of both antennas are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed LPKDA are validated through a fabricated proof-of-concept prototype that exhibited approximately 12% size reduction with minimal degradation in the impedance and pattern bandwidths. This is the first application of Koch prefractal elements in a miniaturized wideband antenna design.

Abstract: In this work, ohmic contact series cantilever RF MEMS switches are used to reconfigure a planar dipole antenna in order to exhibit the same radiation pattern and good impedance matching at any frequency in the X-band range. The antenna is fabricated on a silicon substrate and the desired reconfigurability is achieved with four switches, each one shifting the resonant frequency by 900 MHz approximately. For the successful integration of the system, the antenna and the switches are fabricated from the same materials. Issues regarding the biasing of the switches and the antenna feed are resolved herein.

Abstract: Reconfigurability in an antenna system is a desired characteristic that has been the focus of much research in recent years. In this work, ohmic contact cantilever RF-MEMS switches are integrated with self-similar planar antennas to provide a reconfigurable antenna system that radiates similar patterns over a wide range of frequencies. The different issues encountered during the integration of the MEMS switches and the overall system design procedure are described herein. The final model radiates at three widely separated frequencies with very similar radiation patterns. The proposed concept can be extended to reconfigurable linear antenna arrays or to more complex antenna structures with large improvements in antenna performance.

Abstract: Self-similar antennas have been well known for their multiband characteristics. The use of series ohmic contact cantilever RF MEMS switches in coordination with a simple self-similar antenna is exploited. The compatibility of the designs and the fractal nature of the antenna can lead to large increases in antenna performance, since not only a wider selection of frequencies, but also several different radiation patterns can be radiated with a single antenna. In this paper, the design and the compatibility of the switches and simulated results are presented.

Abstract: Shunt capacitive RF-MEMS switches over coplanar waveguides exhibit low isolation in the down-state position and high return loss in the up-state position at low frequencies. At high frequencies, they have a dual behavior with respect to these characteristics, which can significantly limit their operation bandwidth, as discussed in the literature. This work presents further improvements in relation to the ones obtained in previous work that enlarge even more the bandwidth of this type of switches.

Abstract: MEMS-based products combine both mechanical and electronic devices on a monolithic microchip to produce superior performance over solid-state components, especially for wireless applications. RF-MEMS components are mainly used as inductors, tunable capacitors, switches, in VCOs, and resonators. Popular MEMS switches for wireless applications include transmit/receive duplexers, band-mode selection, time delay for phased-array antennas, and reconfigurable antennas. This paper talks about the use of MEMS switches in conjunction of fractal antennas to achieve multi-frequency, reconfigurable antennas that can be used for a variety of communication applications and how micromachining can be used to fabricated new 3-D MEMS antenna structures for very high frequency applications.

Abstract: In this paper it is shown that planar reconfigurable antennas can cover a wide range of designs such as fractal antennas, triangular antennas, monopole, dipoles, log-periodic etc. Some of these designs can also be used to yield tunable electrically small antennas for miniature wireless device applications. In all cases RF MEMS switches are used to achieve reconfigurability and multi-functionality. Some of the challenges that the designer has to face in biasing and integrating switches with the antenna are presented and discussed.

Abstract: In order for future engineering systems to function in increasingly complex environments in a robust and resilient fashion, they must be able to anticipate threats or opportunities, to discover their state and mode of operation in real time, and to autonomously reconfigure themselves to take advantage of the opportunities or react to impeding threats. These requirements lead us towards engineering systems that are composed of many parts that can assemble themselves at the hardware, software, and logical levels into larger and more capable systems In this paper we discuss an approach for achieving reconfigurable RF and antenna systems as part of a larger and more complex structure.

Abstract: This letter investigates a new reconfigurable antenna technique based on the rotation of a slot. The surface currents are redistributed for each slot position. The antenna is simulated, fabricated, and tested. The return loss frequency tuning matches the simulated data. The antenna radiation pattern remains unchanged for different slot positions. Finally, the process for automatic rotation and control of the slot is investigated using graph models.

Abstract: A new reconfigurable multi band microstrip antenna is presented in this paper. The patch has the shape of a 6 armed star printed on a hexagonal substrate. The reconfigurability of the antenna is obtained by inserting small switches on rectangular slots cut in the patch. Different switch configurations were investigated and different functionalities of the antenna were obtained. The antenna has many practical applications, like in GSM, wireless LAN, WIMAX and many other systems, as illustrated in detail herein. The antenna changes its application according to which switches are activated.

Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for the design of a multi-wideband microstrip-patch antenna. The radiating elements in this antenna are composed of rectangular slots following a Chebyshev distribution of order 10 around a center rectangular slot, and an additional triangular slot. These slots are engraved in the rectangular and triangular patch, joined together in one structure, and fed by one probe feed. A sample antenna was analyzed, simulated, fabricated, and tested. There was good agreement between the computed and test results. The new antenna can be used for several applications, especially in the GSM domain, and for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and several other applications, as detailed in this paper.

Abstract: A tunable electrically small PIFA-as-a-package antenna for miniature wireless device applications has been developed using conventional printed circuit board processing techniques and commercial-off-the-shelf surface mount switches. The design is scalable to any frequency and form factor, while enabling adaptive tuning of the characteristically narrow band resonance of electrically small antennas. Our UHF prototype measures less than 2" (.08lambda) on its longest side and provides approximately -9 dBi of gain from 419-472 MHz. Simulated and measured results will be discussed in the presentation

Abstract: A reconfigurable electrically small capacitively loaded PIFA-as-a-package (PIFA-AAP) is developed to demonstrate the potential utility of reconfigurable antenna technologies to miniature and/or portable UHF wireless devices. The scalable PIFA-AAP concept involves simply integrating the antenna and the device package to maximize the effective area of the antenna given the physical constraints of the application. An elegant approach to frequency-agility is developed using commercial-off-the-shelf solid state switches, overcoming the key weakness of extreme environmental sensitivity inherent to any electrically small antenna. The measured performance of a 25 times 50 times 9-mm PIFA-AAP includes near-contiguous tuning coverage between 407.8 and 463.1 MHz with a total realized gain of better than -10 dBi across the tuning range. The measured bandwidth of our proof-of-concept frequency-agile PIFA-AAP is benchmarked against the Wheeler-Chu-Mclean fundamental limit.

Abstract: This letter discusses the integration of a mode-locked quantum dot (QD) laser and an antenna. A brief theory of operation for the reconfigurable mode-locked QD laser is first presented, and the design of the antenna as well as the matching network used to connect the photonic source to the antenna are explained and discussed. The ultimate goal is to achieve a compact RF/photonic chip that can radiate from 10 to 100 GHz. Here, we present the initial proof of concept and the challenges associated with integrating the antenna with the QD mode-locked laser.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to introduce the idea of how an antenna can be coupled with a mode-locked quantum-dot (QD) laser chip to radiate in the microwave region. A brief theory of operation for the reconfigurable mode-locked quantum-dot laser is first explained and the design of the waveguide and antenna part is next presented. Due to its wide frequency bandwidth, a bowtie antenna is coupled to a QD laser. The goal is to achieve a THz radiator design by coupling the pulsing laser to a reconfigurable fractal antenna capable of radiating at THz frequency. We present a preliminary design that includes antenna simulations and their comparison with measured data. The challenges associated with integrating the antenna with the quantum-dot laser are also presented and discussed.

Abstract: Microwave signal generation from the saturable absorber of a monolithic quantum dot passively mode-locked laser is presented. We observe a differential efficiency of 33% that measures the optical-to-RF power conversion. An optimum extraction efficiency of the saturable absorber of about 86% is also found. To assess the stability of the device, the mode-locking operation regime of the quantum dot device is analyzed and compared to the quantum well system. Our findings confirm that quantum dot mode-locked lasers are suitable candidates for the optical generation of RF signals in a compact and efficient semiconductor device.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce new multiscale AM-FM demodulation algorithms that provide significant improvements in accuracy over previously reported approaches. The improvements are due to the use of new filterbanks based on separable filters supported in just two quadrants. The QEA, robust-QEA and Vakman methods are improved with this new filterbanks. A number of 2-D AM-FM examples are presented, where we observe significant accuracy improvements. For Lena, the mean-square-error for the AM-FM harmonic reconstruction is reduced by 88.31 Similarly, for a AM-FM synthetic example of sinusoidal phase and Gaussian amplitude, the mean-square-error is reduced by: (i) 70.86% for the reconstruction, (ii) 99.66% for the instantaneous amplitude and (iii) 96.52% for the sinusoidal instantaneous frequency component.

Abstract: In this work, design aspects of a frequency reconfigurable antenna are handled using neural networks. The job of the neural network is to determine the switches that are to be made ON for the structure to resonate at specific bands. This task is handled as a classification type of problem and is accomplished by a self-organizing map neural network (SOM NN).

Abstract: Procedures using neural networks are developed for characterizing multiband reconfigurable antennas. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) is used to locate the operational frequency bands of the antenna at different reconfigured conditions. Another self-organizing map (SOM) neural network accomplishes the task of locating the switches to be turned ON for a desired frequency response. The developed formulation is tested on a laboratory prototype antenna.

Abstract: We develop a mathematical framework for quantifying and understanding multidimensional frequency modulations in digital images. We begin with the widely accepted definition of the instantaneous frequency vector (IF) as the gradient of the phase and define the instantaneous frequency gradient tensor (IFGT) as the tensor of component derivatives of the IF vector. Frequency modulation bounds are derived and interpreted in terms of the eigendecomposition of the IFGT. Using the IFGT, we derive the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that describe image flowlines. We study the diagonalization of the ODEs of multidimensional frequency modulation on the IFGT eigenvector coordinate system and suggest that separable transforms can be computed along these coordinates. We illustrate these new methods of image pattern analysis on textured and fingerprint images. We envision that this work will find value in applications involving the analysis of image textures that are nonstationary yet exhibit local regularity. Examples of such textures abound in nature

Abstract: Using reconfigurable static random access memory (SRAM)-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for space-based computation has been a very active area of research for the past decade. Because these commercially available devices are only radiation tolerant in terms of total ionizing dose and single-event latchup, these devices must be qualified for other types of single-event effects to be used in spacecraft. Furthermore, mission requirements often dictate the need to do radiation experiments on the FPGA user circuit. Because both the circuit and the circuit's state are stored in memory that is susceptible to single-event upsets, both could be altered by the harsh space radiation environment. Both the circuit and the circuit's state can be protected by triple-modular redundancy (TMR), but applying TMR to FPGA user designs is often an error-prone process. Faulty application of TMR could cause the FPGA user circuit to output incorrect data. This paper will describe both device-level static testing and user circuit dynamic testing, including a three-tiered methodology for testing FPGA user designs for space readiness.

Abstract: Multidimensional amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) models allow us to describe continuous-scale modulations in digital images. AM-FM models have led to a wide range of applications ranging from image and video compression, video image segmentation, to image retrieval in digital libraries. We present new, two-dimensional algorithms that provide significant improvements in both accuracy and speed over previously reported non-parametric approaches. Results are shown for both real and synthetic images.

Abstract: This letter presents a new approach for the design of a multiresonant printed bowtie antenna. Several techniques were attempted to obtain one antenna which is operational in the 2, 3, and 5 GHz bands corresponding to many wireless applications. The idea of creating different slot configurations on different parts of a single antenna is the basic principle. A prototype of the final antenna design was fabricated tested and a good agreement was found between simulated and tested results.

Abstract: We present the modeling and control system's design of a laser pointing system. The aim of the paper is to provide means of detecting the relative errors of the system to correct them using actuating signals both directly and indirectly. The proposed control system will be used as part of a diagnostic and prognostic analysis for both systems. The paper includes the mathematical model of the two systems and Matlab simulations of the designed controller as well as its response to different stimulus. Diagnostic and prognostic approaches for actuator faults is presented.

Abstract: The analysis of a new printed antenna is presented and discussed. This antenna consists of a printed monopole, with one or two sleeves on each side, fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) line. Switches are used to control the length of the monopole and the sleeves and to tune the resonant frequencies of the antenna. In the case of the double-sleeved antenna, the switch is used to connect or disconnect a second sleeve in the cactus antenna. Measurement results show that the cactus antenna maintains the dipole-like radiation patterns for all the different resonant frequencies

Abstract: A new printed antenna model, the "cactus-antenna" is presented and discussed. The antenna consists of a printed monopole with one or two sleeves attached to each side. Switches are used to control the lengths of the monopole and the length of each sleeve to tune the first and the second resonant frequency of the antenna respectively. In the case of the double-sleeved antenna the switches are used to connect and disconnect a second sleeve to the monopole. Simulation data are compared against measurements to verify the performance of this antenna
